A WEEK OF UNAPOLOGETIC QUEER JOY.
Dear Queer. You are precious. A tender, magnificent, multifaceted gem that thankfully will never fit in a square hole. And chances are, you’re probably exhausted, overbooked, overextended too much of the time. While you’re doing a lot for what you care about, you haven’t had enough space lately to soften, be in your body, resource. Maybe you love yoga, meditation, being in nature, or you want more of that in your life, but the heartbreaking grind of the world has made it challenging to prioritize.
Come release the stress and re-juice!
Stretch out and breathe
for 8 days, 7 nights at Mar de Jade, a gorgeous retreat center nestled between the tropical jungle and the golden sandy beach of Chacala, Mexico.
Join celebrated space holders Avery Kalapa and G Tiarachristie with an amazing circle of queers in intersectional paradise! We’ll gather with intention to strengthen how to meet ourselves and these times with radical compassion, loving kindness, courage, and equanimity. To go beyond survival and reclaim our thrivance!
Remember who you are underneath the hustle. Slow down and soften. Every detail is handled here. Let the land and ocean hold what you’ve been carrying.
Spend a full week centering your health, healing, and happiness with functional, accessible Iyengar Yoga. Clear away tension, pain, and fatigue as you stabilize your joints, strengthen, and regulate your nervous system. The Iyengar lineage offers rare depth. Different from most modern yoga, we’ll explore a unique approach to embodied philosophy, anatomical alignment, and transformation in body, mind, and breath. If you are unfamiliar with this method, we encourage you to try a class with Avery.
Discover new forms of joy, metabolize grief, and reclaim inner power through liberation somatics: movement, play, journaling, mapping, song, relational mindfulness, and *real* rest. Come home to embodied presence. Learn powerful skills to take back to your relationships and day-to-day rhythm.
Practice in a beautiful studio with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, nestled in the tropical jungle mountainside. Nature, deep rest, connection, laughter… and the food is AMAZING. There’s spaciousness: free time to journal, pull tarot, nap, swim in the ocean or pool, soak in the hot tub, get a massage, savor alone time, or connect with dreamy new friends. Let your senses guide you… This is a space to honor your heart’s YES.
Let’s live into the liberated future our radical imaginations dream of, right here, right now.
Part of creating a brave space of belonging means our QT Retreats are designed for at least 50% BIPOC and 50% trans / non-binary participation. Come unfold alongside others who, like you, have been through a lot and are ready to give themselves permission to rest, expand, laugh and yes, receive.
“Being surrounded by trans people all week was pure medicine.”
“I feel a deep connection to the most inner parts of my body and an openness which I can access easily, now, afterwards. There is a warmth coming from an inner well, a well of joy.”
“The care and consideration, a space where the BIPOC numbers were higher than the white people…People were so comfortable being themselves. I loved how free we were during the spontaneous mermaid party.”
“This is a life changing event. A place of inclusion and love. Your heart will be lifted to heights of joy, bliss and delight!”
“I loved this retreat, I learned so much about myself and my capability for connection and gratitude.”
“Joy is a newer experience for me. This week included so many moments of joy. Little things like the morning juices, to huge things like watching the sun rise on one side of the sky while the moon sets on the other. Most significant, feeling completeness in my physical transformation.”
WHY DO PEOPLE LOVE OUR RETREATS?
The Space
We cannot wait to return to Mar de Jade–a beautiful jungle-side and beach-front, Mexican-family-owned, welcoming retreat center that gives back to local community. This land heals! Come let it hold you. The only real decisions you’ll have to make are whether to read in the hammock, hang by the pool, play in the ocean, or nap in your cute air-conditioned room.
Yoga can be awesome, but sadly many yoga spaces – much less bougie beachfront retreats – don’t often feel welcoming to folks like us. Many of us are used to scrappy, DIY community care. While making treasure out of trash is a rad queer form of alchemy, we want our community to get to experience the transformative serenity, care, and nourishment of a lush, high-quality retreat center.
To make such a place a queer trans space is its own disruptive medicine. Come enjoy – You are so worthy of this luscious healing immersion!
Iyengar Yoga Lineage
We’ll be practicing Iyengar Yoga. This classical yoga lineage is well known for alignment, therapeutics, and depth. It’s refreshingly different from mainstream yoga. Inspiring philosophy, pranayama, and FUNctional asana await! At times rigorous, playful, restorative, explore this anatomically grounded approach to asana as a field for insight and integration. Practicing it with Queers? MAGIC.
Come as you are. Rewire your nervous system, super-charge your vital systems, bring soothing release. We center accessibility, stability, and reorganization that honors the divine design of your body. Meet your body and mind with curiosity and equanimity. Reorganize your bones, decompress. Get stronger, grounded, fluid and open. Discover stability and softness through this beautiful lineage.
Classes are designed for who’s present–whether you’re new to yoga, have been practicing for decades, or have chronic pain. Don’t worry, your body challenges won’t hold you back from experiencing the retreat. How we explore embodiment and functional alignment will help you get relief, sleep better, and have less pain. This is an invitation to explore sovereignty, trust, transformation, and self-compassion within your own body and mind.
If you’re new to Iyengar yoga and Avery’s style of teaching, come check out a class (online) or take a class on their on-demand library.
Liberation Somatics
The body is a powerhouse of wisdom–the primary site where structural violence, intergenerational trauma, dominance, and resistance play out. Like fractals, our sociopolitical and interpersonal conflicts mirror our inner conflict. In order to heal our society, we need to tend to our most exiled inner parts and reweave our relations with land, ancestors, and each other. Come explore somatic practices that invite curiosity and open up fresh ways of knowing, communicating, and connecting with embodiment and authenticity.
Through movement, meditation, play, relational mindfulness activities, journaling, and ritual, gain fluency in the subtle languages of your body, your senses, the land, and spaces we move through.
These innovative healing techniques are a perfect compliment to traditional yoga. You’ll gain an amazing skillset for simple, playful home practices for embodiment, radical compassion, loving kindness, deep joy, and equanimity.
Who knew somatic healing could be so full of laughter, play, tender connection!? Expand your capacity to thrive.
Deep Rest
Sometimes we don’t know how much we’re really carrying until we can *actually* let loose and relax.
Give yourself permission to untangle the inner knots, release, and relax. Awaken to a deeper embodiment, authentic expression, and lean into delight!
Many of us are working to dismantle systems of harm; part of that work is imagining, building, and experiencing in real time what we are working to cultivate within our own bodies.
Liberation, belonging, inner freedom . . . what does it feel like for you in your body? Come find out!
Community
Healing in community is powerful and MAGICAL! We’re not meant to heal and grow in isolation. So much is possible when we gather with skillful intention and reverence in spaces that honor nuance and complexity.
Queer community is precious, yes, but can be fraught. The “not belonging” wound is tender. Let’s experiment with what belonging actually means, and feels like, together.
This is a retreat designed to cherish the parts of you that are a work in progress. It’s for our full-on, fluid, brave, tender, work-in-progress, weirdo, queer selves. What if there was nothing to prove?
A big part of any retreat is the people on the journey with you.
And you will be in SUCH good company! The connections we make through affirming kinship allow a deeper sense of wholeness and self love.
A Non-binary Approach: Tender Depth AND Gaycation
This is a space rich with the both/and. Our work together honors the grief, our struggle, our shadow material. When we honor the parts of us that are exhausted, stuck, and shamed, we can experience freedom, delight, and joy.
This retreat goes deep, and also will be SO MUCH FUN!
Re-source your capacity and learn new tools for nervous system regulation, stress reduction, relational mindfulness, tending to shadow parts, and how to access a sense of inner peace, particularly through these times.
THE JUICY DETAILS
lovenotes + logistics
The Ideal Location
Mar de Jade is a spacious, peaceful retreat center nestled between the tropical jungle and golden sandy beach of Chacala in Nayarit, MX. It has a good vibe.
This Mexican family-owned retreat center is rooted in social responsibility and giving back to local community. Started in the 1970’s by a Mexican woman with a vision to create a free medical clinic with her friends, the project has grown to support a free school, organic farm, community center, and more. Three generations of the family still live on-site. Many of the staff are locals who have been involved for decades. We were welcomed and cared for with such warmth and kindness.
Mar de Jade is dotted with elegant lounge areas, hammocks, pools, hot tubs, and beautiful rooms–all with stunning views. Nestled in the heights accessed by a staircase, the yoga shala has panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, tons of yoga props, and gender neutral bathrooms. Palm trees sway, birds sing, and the iguanas roam happily. A large campus, they host multiple retreats at once; there will be ample space to relax, play, and gay it up!
Walk down to the beach and dive in! The water is lovely for swimming anytime of the day: bright turquoise at midday, liquid silver and neon at sunset.
Delight your senses, nourish your vitality: Incredible food together!
Mar de Jade’s food scene is ridiculously beautiful. Vibrant, rich, nourishing meals loaded with local flavor will be a memorable highlight of this trip. Savor the flavors of this unique region with fresh, organic, local foods. We’ll enjoy slow meals together, overlooking the ocean, with real gratitude!
There are kettles of fresh herbal teas always ready. We’ll have three buffet-style meals daily, plus a light breakfast for early risers. Delicious, healthy, creative – every meal here is a colorful feast! Fresh fish, eggs, herbs, fruits and veggies come largely from their own 18-acre organic farm.
Abundant, thoughtful options are available to accommodate your dietary needs, such as plant-based, gluten-free, and dairy-free options. A week off deciding what to cook is its own treat.
Orienting towards right relationship with the land & people
Mar de Jade is a short walk to the center of Chacala, a mellow beach town where the scene is Mexican families vacationing, rather than chic Instagramable beach bars pumping techno for tourists. Join us as humble guests honoring the land and beings as sacred.
It’s a wild time to be alive; tourism is complex. As retreat leaders, we orient towards being in right relationship with this sacred land and people. This area is part of the ancestral and present homelands of the Cora (Náayeri) and Wixáritari (Huichol) peoples. Let’s explore together being in a mutually beneficial, respectful, loving, and intentional relationship with the places, plants, animals, and people we meet.
We invite you to consider the deep work on our selves at this retreat be part of an offering to the land and beings here, past and future. We will dedicate the merit of our practice to the places of suffering within ourselves, this land, and the world–in order to seed a better future. May the goodness of our practice benefit all beings, especially those suffering under generational and systemic violence, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and all intersecting oppressions.
WHAT WOULD IT FEEL LIKE IF YOU SAID YES?
Release Your Self-Worth Baggage
Often, the people who need this the most have the hardest time signing up. “Who am I to get to rest and play when the world is on fire?” If you’re asking this, great. We’ve designed this exactly for gems like you.
The system wins when we run ourselves ragged. Our retreats aren’t the only way to relax, but they are a profoundly replenishing form of support that we’ve seen, over and over, help people deeply reset and make lasting positive changes in their lives.
You know you can’t pour from an empty cup. Come slow down. We affirm each other’s worth and wholeness when we gather together for play, healing, and joy.
Allowing yourself to experience this, in and of itself, is a healing practice.
Nourishing your body, mind, and inner being isn’t escapism, it’s strategic. It’s protection & resilience.
A Retreat by Us, for Us
We’re into queer spirituality, not spiritual bypass. A form of grassroots organizing, this emergent space has been crafted with care to center healing that is inclusive, dynamic, and brave.
Queer Joy Empowers Collective Change
This deep care, healing, play, and relaxation will have very real positive ripple effects – not only for you, but for all you’re connected to. This retreat is a uniquely inclusive, warm, luscious environment for 2SLGBTQIAA+ from diverse social locations to gather, practice, replenish, reconnect us to our purpose, and through that, catalyze positive transformation in our collective world. We are a skills-based retreat with visions of a more liberated future for all. Giovania Tiarachristie
(G/they/them)
G is a queer, trans non-binary person of South East Asian descent who practices embodying joy, radical love, and root-grasping in all that they do. They have a vision for a more healed and liberated society–where systems of compassion replace systems of oppression; where every individual can experience rest, joy, creativity, belonging, and alignment with spirit; where we live in intentionality and harmony with land, community, and ancestors. They believe in the fractals of tending to the places within ourselves and our relations, where we have internalized systemic violence and inherited trauma, as necessary to create the change we seek in society.
G is a skilled facilitator, life coach, body- and energy-worker (LMT & Reiki II), song keeper, and liberation somatics practitioner. They founded Healing as Resistance–a trauma-informed, holistic practice dedicated to promoting a more just and equitable society through the healing and liberation of people, centering Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous and People of Color (QTBIPOC) and other historically marginalized groups. Their unique approach to healing is rooted in politicized somatics, applied Buddhism, and Black and Indigenous liberation theories. Their medicine box includes movement, play, relational mindfulness, land-based practices, ancestral reconnection, journaling, mapping, parts work, meditation, song, and art.
Prior to their healing-focus, G was an urban planner in New York City, with over a decade of experience in the public and non-profit sectors, partnering with low-income communities of color in asset-based participatory community development. They specialized in affordable housing, anti-racism and social equity initiatives, and cultural competency-building in the community development field.
A child of the globe, G grew up in four countries and has visited 30 different countries across five continents. They find home most with chosen family in New York, California, and New Mexico. G currently resides on the unceded ancestral homelands of the Tiwa speaking Pueblos (Albuquerque, NM). They enjoy nature, yoga, meditation, playing, cooking, gardening, singing, dancing, painting, drawing their feels, and crushing Avery in a very competitive game of bananagrams.
Avery Janeczek Kalapa
(they/them)
Avery is an internationally celebrated Iyengar Yoga teacher. They have been practicing yoga since 1999 and teaching since 2004. Their practice includes daily Vipassana/ Insight meditation, which has been supporting their life since 2001. They have been named an expert in their field, and, is someone who never stops learning. In 2009 Avery achieved the highest level of certification available through the US Yoga Alliance (eRYT500) and is a continuing edition provider (YACEP). They are a Level 2 Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher.
Known for their heartfelt enthusiasm, devotion, and depth of technique, Avery’s teaching uplifts inner healing rooted in collective liberation. An advocate for queer and trans inclusive healing, Avery blends alignment, mindfulness, and affirming spirituality in asana with somatic precision, reverence, and care.
They bring an in-depth knowledge of the human body and mind, and how to reduce suffering. Avery specializes in functional asana, stability, and embodiment as an entry point to shifting our relationship to the mind, towards freedom from patterns and conditioning that keep us stuck. Through internal integration, new collective possibilities become tangible.
This method offers a broad range of teachings, both therapeutic and advanced. Both rigorous and accessible, Avery’s teaching will organize your bones, energy (prana) and awareness through embodiment. Their deeply welcoming Iyengar Yoga classes strengthen and stabilize, as you regulate your nervous system. Avery weaves in yoga philosophy and collective liberation into their classes, and a lot of JOY as a rebellion from the forces that are trying to keep us small and scared.
Avery’s work supports queers and other socially conscious yoga lovers to break the burn out cycle, be nourished, and spiritually powerful without bypassing the wisdom of their body and lived experience. Their upbeat, empowering approach to yoga helps people get real relief, and access tangible transformation in body mind and consciousness. They believe all people, especially folks who have been left out of or turned off by mainstream “wellness” should have access to the power and revitalizing nourishment of deep, classical yoga without having to code switch or assimilate in order to practice.
Avery stewards Sadhana Support Collective, an online yoga community based school, and teach retreats, workshops, and therapeutic private sessions. They are a white, queer, trans, working class parent of 2. They have ADHD and are a survivor. Avery is based in unceded Tiwa land, Albuquerque, New Mexico and is also an artist, astrology nerd, cloud watcher, dancer, gardener, goofball, and fabulous cook.
“Gift this to yourself. It will be an experience that gives to you beyond the time you are at the retreat. It’s more than a vacation. It’s an invitation to return to yourself. To slow down. To be present. To just be. The framework and pedagogy used to curate this retreat is queer affirming, loving, and expansive.”
– Whit Hanley

FAQ
Why is there an application process?
What are your health and COVID-19 protocols?
- Two Covid tests are required (at home tests OK)- one taken within 24 hours of your departing flight (or of arrival to Mar de Jade, if you’re already travelling), and another on the third day of the retreat. Both results must be sent to organizers.
- Immunizations are strongly encouraged, as well as regular hand washing!
- We ask folks to mask while traveling in airports and on the plane. Masks are welcome during retreat per your personal needs for self-protection, but are optional for the full group. Most spaces, outside of bedrooms and bathrooms are outdoors or partly open-air.
- We encourage folks to avoid large crowds prior to the retreat, take extra rest, immune-boost, and take the necessary precautions and care to keep everyone safe.
- If you are actively sick and contagious the days leading up to the retreat, please stay home. We ask for your full transparency from a place of care for the full group. Travel insurance is highly recommended, as we and the retreat center cannot provide refunds at such a last minute.
- In the event someone tests positive for COVID-19 after arrival at the retreat center or discovers they were exposed to someone who tested positive in the days leading up, they will be moved into a single-occupancy (if not already in one) and will be responsible for the cost differences in occupancy and room type at Mar de Jade. If no symptoms, they will be required to mask during sessions and social distance, and asked to re-test daily. We will have check-ins with the full group on other needs and requests.
What airport do we fly into?
Do I need a passport?
Yes. We will be traveling to Mexico. Please make sure your passport is valid for at least an additional six months after May 1, 2027, or you may not be let into the country!
Are there any vaccinations that I need?
Generally if coming from the U.S., Canada, or Mexico, being up to date on your standard vaccinations is sufficient. We will be at a high-quality retreat center with high sanitation standards and clean filtered water. If you plan to do some extra traveling and adventuring in throughout Mexico before or after the retreat, including experimenting with street foods, we highly recommend making sure you are up-to-date with Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines. And we recommend sticking to filtered water, avoiding raw or undercooked foods, and keeping your mouth closed when playing in rivers :). Generally for travel, we highly recommend seasonal immunizations against flu as well as COVID-19.
I’m trans, is it safe for me to travel?
What if I have some physical limitations or other accessibility needs?
We encourage you to reach out if you have specific accessibility needs or questions. Mar de Jade is nestled on a mountainside jungle with inclines and steps to get to most rooms, including the yoga shala, which is not wheelchair accessible. Classes will be adaptive and trauma-informed; and everything we offer is optional. Our sessions will include physical movements such as getting up and down from the floor, with individualized modifications and support offered as needed. Classes will be taught in English. We will be in heat and humidity, with air conditioning indoors. If you have questions or concerns, message us, let’s discuss!
What if I don’t have much experience with yoga or Iyengar Yoga?
No problem! This retreat welcomes all levels of yoga practitioners, including brand new. All that is required is a body and a willingness to explore being present in it. We will be practicing both active and restful asana (yoga poses). The classes will be catered to the group’s needs and experience. Individualized modifications and therapeutics will be provided as needed. Unlike other schools of yoga, Iyengar yoga emphasizes stability and alignment, and is usually not taught in a flow format. BKS Iyengar’s innovative approach led him to invent various props such as belts and blocks to support accessibility, prevent injury, challenge and awaken deeper understanding, and allow students to receive the therapeutic benefits of the asanas. It is well suited for every level of ability, age, and physical condition. If you have questions or concerns about your individual condition or needs, please reach out and we can discuss one-on-one. For those who have never tried Iyengar yoga, we highly recommend checking out one of Avery’s online or on-demand classes to see if this style is a good fit for you. You can schedule a private session with them (online or in-person) for specific needs.
What is Liberation Somatics?
Often known as politicized somatics, liberation somatics is an embodied healing practice that explicitly connects body awareness practices and nervous system regulation with the fight against systemic oppression. It views physical and emotional trauma responses as shaped by systemic conditions like racism, classism, and oppression–using somatic awareness to decolonize the mind, process intergenerational and collective pains, build collective resilience, and drive systemic change. It recognizes the body as a primary site where systemic power, dominance, and resistance play out. It moves away from isolated, individualized wellness models and emphasizes shared, community-centered healing that fosters interdependence, connection, and ultimately, supports societal healing. It reclaims body wisdom through Indigenous, queer, and land-based frameworks rather than purely clinical Western models. Our practices will include movement, play, meditation, journaling, parts work, mapping, song, and various relational mindfulness activities. No experience necessary!
What if I have strict dietary restrictions?
Mar de Jade offers options for meat or plant-based, dairy free, and gluten free. Dietary restrictions will be accommodated as much as possible. If you have strict dietary restrictions, please share that in your registration.
Do I have to do everything the group does?
Nope! We are into consent, agency and listening to what you need. Everything we offer is highly recommended to support your experience, and also optional, except opening and closing circles. For the best experience and to support the container of our group, we encourage you to attend all or most sessions. However, if you need to sleep in, take a nap, take a walk, or have alone time instead, no problem. Just let us know so we know you’re OK. In class, there’s always alternative set ups, ways of working, and options available.
What’s the scene with substances and alcohol on these retreats?
We are honored to have sober queers on retreat with us, and want this to be a space that feels good for people in recovery. However, it is a mixed space where, while many people do not drink, some people may have an alcoholic drink, here and there, usually with dinner. We also want it to be as much as possible, a shame-free space, where we trust people’s agency and trust you to ask for what you need from the group. In the past, people have self-organized AA/ Universal Recovery meetings and those have been well attended and appreciated; we encourage these meetings if you’d like to create that space. If you have requests for how to support your attendance as a sober person, email us. Some people bring and quietly use medical marijuana; please note marijuana is NOT legal in Mexico. There is no smoking or vaping allowed at Mar de Jade, indoors or outdoors. Generally we are focused on healing and health. We do not support participants using recreational drugs during the retreat. Getting intoxicated on retreat is not allowed, and may lead to you having to leave the retreat early, without a refund. If you struggle with an addiction, or use a large amount of daily marijuana in order to cope, and are unsure if the space is right for you but want to attend, we invite you to share about your situation in the application.
Is there a payment plan option?
What is your refund policy?
Obtaining travel insurance is highly recommended, as we cannot provide refunds, transfers, or discounts for cancellations, illness, arriving late, leaving early, or travel snafus. If you cancel your participation in the retreat for any reason, this cancellation policy applies. As soon as a deposit is made, these funds are used to secure your trip and pay the retreat center, which is what the majority of each ticket goes towards. These fees are due from the retreat organizers many months in advance. Payments to retreat centers by the organizers are nonrefundable, as the livelihood of the local staff relies on secure income. We are grateful to travel to special places and respect their policies. TRAVEL INSURANCE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The WeTravel platform we use offers quality and affordable travel insurance at registration through Trawick International, which, in the event of eligible trip cancellation or trip interruption, can cover 100-150% cost of your trip, including the retreat, flight, and other travel expenses. It costs about $140-250, depending on the level of coverage and costs you want to insure. In our continued COVID era it should be considered a given for any international travel.
In the event you have already paid and you are not able to attend, your funds paid will be donated as a scholarship slot, prioritizing QTBIPOC in financial need.
In the unlikely event that the organizers must cancel due to natural disaster, illness, etc, we cannot guarantee a refund – however, we will reschedule the retreat!
Am I queer enough?
Yes, no questions. Even if you’re in the most cis-het norm situation, you are queer regardless of what kind of relationship or community you have access to; regardless of what stage you are in your coming IN and/or gender transition journey. We welcome you with open arms and are excited for you to experience the magic of feeling affirmed in your queerness in community! You don’t have to perform anything. You are enough and already belong.
Still have questions? Want to inquire about a scholarship or make a donation to support QTBIPOC access? We’d love to hear from you!
